Milk thistle is an herbal remedy derived from the biennial plant milk thistle. It is prickly plant with purple flowers. The fruits are black achenes with a simple long white pappus which acts as a wind dispersal mechanism allowing the plant to spread out. Plant can grow up to 2 meters high. Originally native to Mediterranean region of Europe, but nowadays found throughout the world. Used in medicine due to its main active ingredient silymarin which is both an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
Infuse tablespoon (5 grams) of seeds with 2-3 dcl of boiling water and let rest for 15 minutes minimum. Strain and drink slowly.
If desired, seeds can be ground before infusing.
They can also be sprinkled over salads, cereals, yoghurt, cheese and other milk products.
